The urbanization of rural people and the innovations of things such as the assembly line
and the NRA created a new market and culture for gun production and gun ownership.
The NRA (The National Rifle Association) was founded in 1872 following the end of the
civil war. The main goal of the NRA at first was to try and improve marksmanship in the
general population of the United States of America. The union war statistics said that for
every one thousand shots fired there was only one confederate soldier killed. The NRA
also had backing from the United States government, congress established the National
Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice in 1901, and the Civilian Marksmanship
Program in 1903. The United States military also donated thousands of over stocked
guns from the civil war to the NRA. These decisions from the US government quickly
prompted the NRA to relocate its headquarters to Washington D.C. in 1907.

With the invention of the assembly line in  1913 there was a mass migration to cities from
people looking for work. The men in this job did the same mondain job of just doing the
exact same job for years. Men lost their sense of being a “man” and looked for ways to
get that back. This is where the NRA and easy to get guns such as mail order guns came
into play. The NRA tried to show men where they could go and shoot guns to try to get
their "manliness" back. Mail order catalogs made it very easy and accessible to obtain
guns. These catalogs marketed guns to be a very fun thing and a very cheap thing to
acquire. They would market how much cheaper the guns are there compared to a gun
store. In one such catalog you could buy a gun for sixty seven cents in 1897, which would
be just under twenty dollars today.

The creation of the NRA, the programs and boards
created by congress, and easy to get guns from things such as mail order catalogs
created a gun culture in the United States that was helped from the urbanization of
people.
