Empathy in rats
In an experiment a rat was given a choice of saving another rat that was close to drowning or getting to eat chocolate. Surprisingly the rat would choose to save the other rat 50% to 80% of the time. In another study they would trap one rat of one species and another rat of a different species would have the choice to let out the trapped rat. They study showed that rats would more instinctively help the same species of rat that they grew up with and that they were more familiar with.

Given a choice between eating chocolate and helping a pal, rats make the noble decision.
